What does education mean?
|
What does education mean? Do we really understand it? Are we really educating the ones who look up to us? Whether we are teachers, parents, mentors or supervisors. Are we doing our job right?
Does education mean creating subject experts with excellent grades or does it mean creating life experts who know who they are, what life is and how to live it purposefully? Today we have individuals with excellent skill sets, very successful in their careers but a sheer failure in life. They suffer from insecurities, fear, jealousy, hatred and may such diseases like this. They don’t know what peace is, their mind keeps ticking all the time, strategizing and planning. A small taste of failure can harm their ego. They can adopt any measures, literally any measures to stay ahead in the race of life. But is life a race? The present education system surely believes that. From the very childhood, feeling of competition is instilled in us. We are made to believe success means staying at the top, always ahead of others. We always feel threatened with somebody else’s success because his success means our failure. How can such individuals stand as a nation, as a community, if they feel threatened with each other’s growth? We talk about brotherhood, we talk about peace, we talk about unity…But do you think our education system is creating such beings. Our education system is creating individuals, people who have their own personal and individual interest; people who are pulling the world in their own direction. And one day they will just tear it apart.
It is high time now that we revolutionize the present system. It is not only government’s responsibility but responsibility of each and every one of us, as a parent, teacher, or a mentor. The revolution must begin from us. We must ourselves be educated in the right way before we can educate others. We must ourselves know who we are and what is our purpose?
Once we know that, a transformation will occur. The same transformation, which changed a killer Angulimal to a peace loving Saint. After this transformation a seeker becomes ready, absolutely ready for any skill or subject, you would like to teach him/her. His/Her mind is steady as the mountain. It does not waver and can be made to achieve anything and face any circumstances with love, harmony, and peace. Mahatam Gandhi, Sri Aurbindo, Swami Vivekanad are few such examples.
Therefore, the job of our education system should not be to create great scholars but create beings with a complete knowledge of their true Self. Only then can a peaceful world be created.
